Open Streets UpTown Waterloo is a series of summer afternoons where King Street comes alive with music, food, art, and much more! We’re looking for Events Assistants volunteers to help make these afternoons a success.

Open Streets Volunteer Events Assistants will:

  • Work with other dedicated community members and leaders
  • Enjoy the happenings on King Street while they help out
  • Be key contributors to the success of an awesome summer event series

This sounds awesome, am I qualified?

We are looking for people of all experience levels who have good communication skills, can act as team players and are responsible. Some positions will require that volunteers are mobile and able to be outdoors in less than ideal weather (i.e. heat or rain). Teens aged 16-18 must have parent consent. Younger teens can volunteer with a parent or guardian. Applicants who can volunteer for more than one event date are preferred.

Great, so what roles can volunteers fill?

There are a variety of positions that Events Assistants will fill. If there is something you are particularly interested in, be sure to let us know!

Open Streets volunteer roles include:

Street Chalkers: chalk artists will decorate the street with way-finding and event information. Doodling is also encouraged.

Animations Assistants: help the street animators find their designated spots on the street, and set up their home for the day.

Registration and HQ Assistants: help the Volunteer Coordinator make volunteer check-in a breeze, and provide information to event attendees.

Runners: You’ll be helping move supplies from HQ to the street, fill-in for your fellow volunteers that need a break, and help events staff on an as-needed basis

Parking Assistants:  You will help us alert motorists of the nearing street closure and help guide cars off King street once it begins to close to traffic.

Photographer Assistant: Help the event photographer throughout the day and collect waiver forms from the photo subjects.

Greeters and Guides: Welcome people to the event and provide information to the attendees. Use the map provided to help people find their way.

I want to sign up, what’s next?

The first step is to fill out an application form. Once we have reviewed your application, you can select your shifts and desired roles.

Will I receive any training?

All volunteers, new and returning will be required to attend a training and orientation session. The session is designed to familiarize you with your role, the structure of the day and ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience volunteering time with Open Streets.
